Just to give you an idea the rule of thumb which is used by many in HVAC industry is 25 to 30 BTU per square foot in the home for a moderate climate. Therefore, a 2,000 sq ft home would need a 50,000 to 60,000 BTU/h furnace. Again, to find out the right furnace input for your home, the best way is to get the heat loss / heat gain calculation done properly.

Just like how the humid air in summer seems to add a few degrees to the temperature the same goes for indoor air. This allows you to set your furnace to a lower temperature, while still achieving maximum warmth and comfort. Dry air can cause sore throats, dry skin, itchy eyes, and bloody noses and dry air can be a contributing factor in catching a cold or flu. A healthy level of humidity is between 35 and 50 percent. Too much humidity can increase airborne mold, bacteria, and fungi that, when ingested, can lead to other health concerns including infections, asthma, allergies, and other respiratory illnesses.

You probably wouldn't get a brand-new car and plan to never have to put air in the tires, change the oil and check out any unfamiliar noises. Your home comfort system is like your car’s engine; it’s a mechanical device with a motor, electrical components... and even fuel. So it is important to have routine maintenance of your home comfort system by a qualified technician. If not maintained properly and routinely, even the best heating and air conditioning equipment could cause problems and become less 'fuel' efficient over time.

If it is the by-pass type, make sure the feed water valve (saddle valve) is open and the unit is powered up. Check the panels for sediments and clean / replace them if necessary. Humidifiers must be cleaned and services when the heating season ends.
